Alpha Protocol is a type of third person action game, meaning players can see Michael Thorton as the main character and surroundings. Thorton is a CIA agent who can use various weapons and fight using Kenpo, and tracking tools.

In the game, the main character will also get the Advancement Point that is useful to improve the ability to use a particular weapon and others.
Special abilities can be used freely, but require a grace period of "cooldown" before it can be used again.
